Facebook Bans White Nationalists

Facebook and Instagram plan to implement a ban on white nationalism and white separatism next week.

The platform posted the announcement to their blog in an article entitled “Standing against hate.”

The company will use AI to regulate the ban as the company has 2 billion users.

“Over the past few years we have improved our ability to use machine learning and artificial intelligence to find material from terrorist groups. Last fall, we started using similar tools to extend our efforts to a range of hate groups globally, including white supremacists,” Facebook said.

The push may have been partly influenced by the New Zealand shooting incident which was streamed on Facebook by a white nationalist.

Facebook banned white supremacist content prior to the white nationalist and separatist ban. The company stated the reasoning for this distinction was due to “thinking about broader concepts of nationalism and separatism — things like American pride and Basque separatism, which are an important part of people’s identity.”

However, after 3 months of review with experts in race relations the company decided that a meaningful distinction of white supremacy and white nationalism couldn’t be reached.
