Facebook Is Investing $300 Million In Local News

Facebook announced today it will invest $300 million over the course of three years into organizations supporting the development of local news.

Facebook has taken a number of steps over the past couple years to fix fake news on their platform, after first claiming it wasn’t an issue.

This follows the company’s general trend towards being more local community based. Last year Zuckerberg made a Facebook post stating how posts from businesses and media crowd out the more personal closer-to-home posts from friends and family:

The receivers of the $300 million investment include the Pulitzer Center, Knight-Lenfest Local News Transformation Fund, Report for America, the Local Media Association, and the American Journalism Project.

The money will go towards reporting projects, training, and improving the branding content used.
