Mass shooting in Florida shakes eSports community

The mass shooting at a video gaming tournament in Jacksonville Florida yesterday that killed two people has caused many in the gaming community and those who’ve never even heard of eSports until now to express their sympathies.

The two victims killed at the Madden Championship Series were 22 year old Elijah Clayton, (Twitter True_818) and 27 year old Taylor Robertson, a husband and father (Twitter Spotmeplzz).

Twitch a livestreaming video platform, was livestreaming the tournament during the shooting, causing many viewers to worry.

EA Games, which built the Madden games they were playing, also expressed their sympathies regarding the tragedy.

The shooter after committing the senseless act turned the gun on himself and killed himself.

The event was one of four regional qualifiers for the tournament.

Florida has now been through several mass shootings in the last few years: a shooter killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland in 2018; five people were murdered at the Fort Lauderdale airport in 2017, and 49 individuals were killed at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando in 2016.

The fast growing industry of eSports might well consider now to take immediate steps to invest in better security, similarly to the security that goes into traditional sporting events.
