Tumblr Turns 10

Today is Tumblr’s 10th birthday. Tumblr’s CEO David Karp had the domain name “tumblr.com” as a platform for tumblelogs. A tumblelog is a blog supporting short-form multimedia content.

In 2006, Marco Arment moved to New York and began working with David Karp on web development for media companies.

Over the years, Tumblr has become a popular platform for blogging, mostly thanks to its hybrid multimedia publishing capabilities alongside forum style socializing. In April of 2007, a new interface was created for the site that included reblogging.

In honor of the 10th anniversary, David Karp did an “Answer Time” on February 17th, which is an online event on Tumblr where someone in the public eye opens themselves up to public questions from Tumblr users. One of the questions included “Who posted the first post to Tumblr?” to which David responded jokingly, “This is a subject of intense debate among theologists. I’m open to and respect all beliefs on this matter.”

Other questions looked at how Tumblr could be improved, addressing concerns about diversity or inclusion. In 2017, Tumblr has 336 million Tumblrs, and 146 billion posts.

David explains that internet culture is at a crossroads where previous barriers to digital expression are gone, and opportunities for positive community environments will be a focus for the next ten years.
