Twitter launches Timeline Verification Badges

Twitter’s verification badges let people know that a Twitter account of public interest is authentic. The blue symbol appears next to the account’s name.

In July 2016, Twitter finally added an online application process for verified accounts, rather than just waiting for Twitter to find the user.

Twitter is now also adding the little blue badge to the Twitter timeline. Originally, users had to go to the profile page to see if another user was verified. Now, the badge will be alongside the tweets sent as well.

This was mostly to benefit journalists and sports figures who are the top users of verified accounts. Journalists represent nearly a quarter of the verified accounts and sports clubs and athletes make up about 18% of the accounts. Actors and entertainers make up 13%.
