Twitter dropped Vine and will Launch “Vine Camera”

Twitter broke the news last October that it would be dropping Vine, the popular platform for 6-second videos. In the announcement, they pointed out that the website that housed the videos will remain as an archive to view.

This January, the company will be transitioning the Vine app to “Vine Camera” on January 17th. The Vine Camera app will let users make 6.5 second looping videos to post to Twitter. Users can also connect their Twitter account to their Vine account so their followers can find them on Twitter.

Users can also download their videos from the app, but only until January 17th, when they will only be viewable on the platform. The captions and comments from the videos can also be downloaded from an HTML file that’s included with the Vine videos.

On the plus-side, users will continue to make the format of videos they love (endlessly repeating short clips), but on the downside, it’s unclear whether the communities built on Vine will be sustained through Twitter.
