9/11 and Social Media

The events of September 11th, 2001 in America led to the loss of  2,996 people. In the 15 years following 9/11 there was a social media boom. Facebook in 2004, YouTube in 2005, Twitter in 2006, Instagram in 2010, alongside a myriad of other lesser known social media programs.

There are many recorded phone calls and video footage of that day, but with the increased level of activity, phone lines were tied up. What if today’s social media had been around in 2001?

Social media would have created a clearer picture of what happened inside the towers during 9/11. With social media featuring live broadcasting, we would have seen detailed accounts of the situations in the towers. While this is an image few may wish to witness, it would have given officials better insight in why the towers collapsed. While 9/11 was heavily documented, our visual evidence of that day is what was going on outside the towers. The people filming the very tall towers from the streets and nearby office/apartment buildings.

Social media would have given many a chance at a goodbye, since some family members were never given a chance to give a final phone call regarding a family member in the towers or plane.

Social media would have also provided faster intelligence in regards to the actual crisis. The towers could have been evacuated sooner. The relief and rescue efforts would have been faster and more reliable.

In the 15 years since the event, the U.S. has grown stronger and every 9/11 we remember those who are immortalized by our memories.
