Twitter Turns 10!

Yesterday was Twitter’s 10th anniversary. It’s hard to believe Twitter’s launch date was on July 15th, 2006.

People on Twitter have noted the ten year anniversary. Ten years ago Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter, sent out the first tweet, which read “Just setting up my twittr”

Dailystar has written articles on celebrity first tweets and the most controversial tweets of the last ten years.

Twitter has been a go-to source for awareness:

“I think Twitter is great for spreading awareness on major global issues. I think the idea of the hashtag is revolutionary. You could put a hashtag into anything and then it’ll direct to that topic,” says Matty Zaretsky.

Matty deals with Nail Patella Syndrome and Kallmann’s Syndrome as well as diabetes. Twitter is a way of finding others who have gone through the issues involved.

“For example what I try to do is put in my disability because it’s very rare and put some facts that people could use […] and maybe you’ll find a lot of other people on social media who also have that illness and will try to connect”

Some people have noted that Twitter has failed to diversify and evolve as the years have gone by, with the site looking almost exactly as it did ten years ago.

Facebook, on the other hand, has gone into the realm of virtual reality, instant messaging, and mobile payments, showing a need to continually please it’s user base.

On the other hand, Twitter has grown significantly over the last ten years. It’s grown from a five-person startup to a multi-billion dollar company.

Jack Dorsey is optimistic about Twitter, and hopes for it to last beyond his lifetime.
