Selena Gomez started her career as a little girl on Barney. Later, she became a teen singer and actor for the Disney channel. Many people, however, know her as Justin Bieber’s girlfriend.
Selena Gomez has recently announced to W Magazine she’ll probably be giving up on social media in the not-so-distant future. She claims she used social media because of her age and the fact that because everyone was talking about her, she wanted to be involved in that discussion.
Selena Gomez’s Twitter account (@selenagomez) has over 38 million followers and that calls into question how this will affect her popularity.
“I think that on the one hand it takes her away from her fans, as there are less platforms for her but I don’t think so highly about social media in general so I understand where she’s coming from. I do think it’ll affect her fan base,” says Annie Ryder, a skeptic towards social media’s high praise.
Selena has faced lots of media / fan attention for her involvement with Justin Bieber in the past. In 2011, Justin Bieber fans sent her death threats on Twitter after she was seen kissing Justin Bieber while on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia.
As W Magazine points out, social media and mobile technology has really helped build Selena’s fan base. Photos of her from fans are uploaded onto Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, and other forms of social media.
It’s hard to believe that such a high profile singer / actor would even consider putting herself off the social media map. Time will tell if it’s a throwaway statement or a serious intention.
